It'll be a War! UFC Aired in China? (!!)

Jul 1st, 09 Nightlife by Morgan Short 3

Good news if you like the killing arts. I was just hangin' at Cagewriter, and they've got news that Dana White, despotic czar of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (and numerous tertiaries and subsidiaries), has signed some sort television rights deal allowing Chinese TVs access to the UFC.

Here's Dana concluding that Chinese people have something of an affinity with martial arts:

"Obviously China is a huge market and the Chinese understand the martial arts probably better than anyone else in the world."

The writer of the article, Maggie Hendricks for Cagewriter online MMA magazine, throws in her support for White, characterizing White as "incredibly smart":

"The UFC is following the likes of McDonald's in looking for Chinese dollars. It's an incredibly smart move, considering how the Chinese people have happily gobbled up American exports."

It's renminbi over here, Maggie. Or even the "yuan", if you prefer.

Canada Day: Shite All Going On

Jul 1st, 09 Nightlife by Morgan Short 3

Canadians, it's my lamentable duty to report that pretty much nothing is going on for Canada Day (today) in Shanghai. Alas.

The management, however, down at Windows Scoreboard will be playing Canadiana on the stereo, so that's something. All your favorite Canadian hits from Gowan, on through to Moist, on to the Dayglo Abortions.

Maybe not the Dayglo Abortions. Request it.

Here's the event details from manager Matt:

"I haven't really planned anything. Canadian tunes, I guess. We've got people coming down. I've been on holiday. What? You want pancakes?"

Yeah, pancakes would be a start, man.

"At least the desserts were shining like the Pearl Tower"

Promptly seated with a choice of indoor or outdoor, no complaints- chose indoor due to A/C. Unfortunately table was very wobbly, not at the base but at on the table top and for this caliber of restaurant, they should check these things. Table water was served without any fuss and sans a whole bunch of up-selling for wildly overpriced bottled waters, which I appreciate. Bread basket was served right behind drinks and aside from the overly powerful cumin bread, it was tasty with good texture and the butter was at a good temperature for spreading. Starters were first and 3 in the party had the house salad. Nice and light with a good quality goat cheese and a few candided nuts in the mix as well. A little bland but above all, generic for a 98 RMB salad, but such is unfortunately ofte [..read on]
